Product Information
Pyro-Tex Stainless-Steel Reinforced Flexible Graphite Sheet
Slade starts with special patented yarns. The yarns are reinforced with flattened strips of stainless steel and totally encapsulated in flexible graphite (fig. 1). We “weave” these yarns into sheets 80” wide (lengths: 80”, 160” and higher). .gif)
The woven design produces a ‘metallic leaf-spring effect’ (fig. 2), developed to deform easily to fill voids, scratches and warped surfaces. Once compressed, they form a tough but resilient graphite sheet. The sheet cuts easily despite their toughness.
Pyro-Tex Sheet has the feel of leather, the toughness of stainless steel, and the seal-ability of graphite. Flexible enough to ship in tubes (fig. 3). | Properties | Ranges |
| Pressure: | 4,500 PSI (310 BAR), Consult the Factory, as operating temperature increases, the pressure limit of the gasket decreases) |
| Sizes: | 80" X 80" and 80" X 160" |
| pH: | 1-14 |
| Temp: | Inert temperatures up to 1800°F/1000°C, Consult the Factory, especially for temperatures over 1000°F/540°C. Mild oxidizers to 975°F/520°C, Consult the Factory, pressure dependent) |
| Recommended: | It is recommended that the Factory be consulted for applications over 500°F, over 600 psi, or with operating media such as mild oxidizers, strong oxidizers, acids, or other chemicals that will affect the limitations of the gasket. |
Construction Method
Step 1: Construction of Weaving Yarns: Flat metallic leaf springs of stainless steel encapsulated in a thick graphite foil jacket.
Step 2: Yarns are woven into a tough, resilient cloth-like sheet. The stainless steel reinforced yarns crisscross throughout the cloth to impart tremendous strength and resiliency to the sheet and gaskets cut from the sheet.
Step 3: The woven sheets are compressed to increase density to form a leak-tight gasket sheet, ready to cut. The sheets are flexible enough to roll for shipping and storage.
Dimensions
| Width: | Up to 80" |
| Length: | Up to 160" |
| Thickness: | 1/16", 3/32" and 1/8” |
Benefits
- Puts the Strength of Stainless Steel into the Flexibility and Temperature & Chemical Resistance of Graphite
- Is for extreme applications of temperature or pressure. Slade Pyro-Tex is good up to 4,500 PSI (310 BAR). Standard Flexible Graphite has no inherent strength making it subject to pressure blowout.
- Excellent for Thermal-Cycling due to the flat-metallic spring reinforcement construction
- Extremely tough, handles physical abuse, leather-like feel
- Cuts with shears, supplied with sheet when requested
Specialty Parts & OEM Products
Slade R & D Engineering will develop sealing solutions for your most difficult projects. Manufacturing our own patented graphite foil yarns, reinforced with carbon fibers and metallic foils at our factory in North Carolina, Slade retains flexibility even in the most demanding geometric shapes.

Pyro-Tex Joint Sealant
Slade’s self-forming gasket, the Pyro-Tex Joint Sealant, is made from patented graphite-foil encapsulated carbon-fiber reinforcement yarns. This self-forming gasket when in place is compressed to fit snugly. The Pyro-Tex Joint Sealant HP (high pressure) is made from the same patented graphite-foil encapsulated stainless-steel foil reinforcement yarns as our sheet. Available in 25 and 50 foot spools in various configurations, shapes, and thicknesses.
- Change gasket without pulling tube bundles
- Adhesive bonds in place during installation
- Self forms into endless gasket
- Made to virtually any thickness or width
- Never hardens or dries out
- Metallic reinforcement impedes extrusion
- Readjustable, often re-usable
- Individual strands reinforced with:
carbon fiber, 304 SS, or Inconel foil - Packaged on plastic spools
- Inventory just one or two sizes
- Eliminates the need to remove heat exchanger tubes from the shell

- Performs better than:
- Double jacketed metal gaskets
- Spiral wound gaskets
- Corrugated metal gaskets
- More reliable than TFE joint sealants
- Eliminates large inventories
- Easier to Handle
- Stops damage from rough handling
- Doesn't kink out of shape
- Adjusts to warped flanges
- Fills pits and scratches up to 1/8" deep
Services:
- High temperatures (Inert temperatures up to 1800°F/1000°C, Consult the Factory, especially for temperatures over 1000°F/540°C. Mild oxidizers to 975°F/520°C, Consult the Factory, pressure dependent)
- High pressures (Carbon fiber reinforced, low pressure services only. 304 SS reinforced, up to 4500 psi/310 bar, Consult the Factory, as operating temperature increases, the pressure limit of the gasket decreases)
- High equipment wear (scratches/pores)
It is recommended that the Factory be consulted for applications over 500°F, over 600 psi, or with operating media such as mild oxidizers, strong oxidizers, acids, or other chemicals that will affect the limitations of the gasket.

SOOTBLOWER Sets
Slade soot blower sets combine carbon fiber reinforced graphite foil with alloy bearing rings.
Advantages:
-Self lubricating
-High density
-Lubricated bearing support
-Uniform deployment of gland stress
-Easy to install/Easy to remove
-Extrusion prevention system
-Low thermal expansion
-Sacrificial bearing surface
-Virtually no volume loss
Common problems with soot blower packings:
- Wear of the throat and gland follower of the soot blower stuffing box causes the steam lance to rest on the packing and distort it. The distortion of the packing permits extrusion and the lose sealing capability.
- With lack of proper bearing support for the lance, wear begins causing linear scratches which become leak paths through the sealing set.
- Steam penetration into the stuffing box condenses and becomes trapped until the next blow-down cycle when the condensed water rapidly expands to steam to create a leak path through the packing set permanently damaging it and causing subsequent leaking.
Solutions using Slade Soot Blower Packing Sets:
- These alloy bearing rings also prevent distortion of the sealing rings by keeping them perfectly aligned to one another.
- By placing one of these alloy bearing rings at each end and at least a third in the middle of the packing set, Slade provides a bearing surface which supports the lance and gives it excellent linearity.
- The alloy bearing rings close up the clearances around the throat and gland to prevent extrusion of the packing rings.
